Slight comeback
After having two losing sessions, I played two $10 SNG's. Lost the first one (bounced in fifth) and won the second. Whew!
I'm still a big loser from those limit games, but my bankroll has only suffered a 16BB loss instead of 30. Thank God.
Time to go to bed while I'm "ahead."

Spanked!
The good session was followed by two bad sessions. Ugh. Down -30BB for the day.
Ditto the last line of my last post.

Ramming and Jamming
There are better places to read about it; I'll just tell you what it did for me in one session:
58 minutes, 72 hands
VP$IP: 16.67%
Won $ at SD: 60%
Aggression: 1.04
Up +15BB
+20.31BB/100 hands
I could have been more aggressive, and on one hand in particular, it would have netted me a LOT more money:
Preflop: Hero is UTG+2 with Ac, Ad.
UTG calls, UTG+1 folds, Hero raises, MP1 folds, MP2 folds, MP3 folds, CO folds, Button calls, SB folds, BB folds, UTG 3-bets, Hero caps, Button calls, UTG calls.
Flop: (13.50 SB) Jc, 3d, 6s (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets, Button raises, UTG calls, Hero calls.
Turn: (9.75 BB) Tc (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets, Button raises, UTG calls, Hero calls.
River: (15.75 BB) 6h (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero checks, Button checks.
Final Pot: 15.75 BB
Main Pot: 15.75 BB, between Hero, Button and UTG. > Pot won by Hero (15.75 BB).
UTG shows Kd Kh (two pair, kings and sixes).
Hero shows Ac Ad (two pair, aces and sixes).
Button shows Jh As (two pair, jacks and sixes).
Outcome: Hero wins 15.75 BB.

Fluke
I'm beginning to suspect that those two amazing weeks of profit were a fluke. Which isn't to say that I don't expect to win out over time, but probably nowhere near as much as I did those two weeks. So far this week I am up +14BB at a rate of +3.89BB/100 hands. Haven't had much time nor desire to play, though. With classes coming to an end and final projects due, I've spent most of my time off the tables. Tonight was the first time I was able to put in some serious time, and it just wasn't paying off. At no point was I up by more than 9BB. Mostly I'd get blinded down, or chuck my cards after the flop, then win a smallish pot to keep me at the same level. Boring. After four hours of this, I turned off the computer, ate some food, and watched Rex the Runt instead.

Goodbye, Hollywood Park?
Uh, oh. What does this mean for poker in LA?
An effort to move the famed Hollywood Park racetrack from Inglewood to Irvine is a tale of the suburbs and the inner city.
For Irvine, a racetrack at the former El Toro Marine base would bolster its hopes to transform the closed base into a giant park surrounded by homes, offices and stores. Until 2002, the old military compound was headed for rebirth as a commercial airport.
In Inglewood, some track old-timers lament the prospect of losing the 66-year-old institution that opened during Hollywood's golden era. But city officials are upbeat about the possibility of a move, which would open the track's 237 acres to retail development that could double its current tax take.

Arnold
The reviews are still out on our movie star governor, but one thing is clear: he can get things done. Whether those things are right or not is another thing altogether. His latest accomplishment, worker's comp reform, may not actually achieve what it is intended to do, according to the Economist:
Now he'll have to grapple with the budget, and we'll see whether he will use his powers of persuasion to address the structural deficits in the state budget. He may have a secret weapon: "One little-publicised provision gives the governor the right to suspend its strictures if a 'fiscal emergency' arises." This was, in fact, one of the reasons I opposed Prop 58. Providing that kind of power to a single person seems an extraordinarily dangerous thing to do. However, the centrist "unelectable via the normal process" governor may be willing to oppose the anti-tax foes within his own party and raise certain taxes: "he mused in a rare interview that perhaps his anti-tax stance was 'wishful thinking.'"
Guess we'll have to wait and see.

This is the one I want
Top Gear tells us about the new Lotus Exige. I want it.

It looks like a bad ass alien, features Lotus handling, and has a Toyota engine tweaked by Lotus:
One major difference is that Lotus has aimed to get rid of the thump-in-the-back difference between cam profiles that's so noticeable (and intoxicating) in the Celica. The company was keen to avoid upsetting the balance of the car; the high-speed cam comes in at around 6200rpm but stays working until you drop below 5800rpm, meaning you won't be bumped back down to standard output during gearchanges - though with a red shift light on the dash, you should always be able to change up at exactly the right moment.

Sunday morning freerolls at Multi
It's damn early (9 AM), but it's free for players who have played 200 raked hands or more. Even better, I made $30. The hourly rate for that is lousy, but it was fun. Here's the hand that bounced me:
BB (t4480)
UTG (t31466)
UTG+1 (t18172)
MP1 (t41840)
Hero (t1842)
CO (t24056)
Button (t20764)
SB (t3380)
Preflop: Hero is MP2 with Qc, Kd.
UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, MP1 folds, Hero raises to t1842 (All-In), CO folds, Button folds, SB folds, BB calls t342.
Hero shows Qc Kd. BB shows Th 9s.
Flop: (t4434) Td, 9d, Ah (2 players, 1 all-in)
Turn: (t4434) 9c (2 players, 1 all-in)
River: (t4434) 2h (2 players, 1 all-in)
Final Pot: t4434
Main Pot: t4434 (t4434), between BB and Hero. > Pot won by BB (t4434).
Results:
BB (full house, nines full of tens).
Hero (one pair, nines).
Outcome: BB wins t4434.
Three regrets: not calling with J9o on the button (would have flopped a set and made a boat on the river), not calling a bet on a scary flop with tens (the other guy had nines), not going all-in with jacks (I was on the bubble, and not willing to go out--so I guess I just regret the timing of this one).

Better yet
Just finished an hour twenty minute session at .50/1 and ended up +28.87BB/100 hands. That's way more like it.
On one table I was getting a run of good cards, as evidenced by my seeing the flop 30% of the time, and winning at showdown 100% of the time. Too bad everyone left that table. I went to another table, but that wasn't really doing it for me, so after I found myself up by a quarter, I left.
Biggest win of this session, but probably played too cautiously, due to the scariness of the board:
Preflop: Hero is CO with Ks, Kd.
UTG folds, UTG+1 calls, MP1 folds, MP2 calls, Hero raises, Button folds, SB calls, BB calls, UTG+1 calls, MP2 calls.
Flop: (10 SB) Ad, 9c, Kc (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, MP2 bets, Hero raises, SB calls, BB folds, UTG+1 calls, MP2 calls.
Turn: (9 BB) Ah (4 players)
SB checks, UTG+1 checks, MP2 checks, Hero bets, SB calls, UTG+1 calls, MP2 raises, Hero calls, SB calls, UTG+1 calls.
River: (17 BB) 8h (4 players)
SB checks, UTG+1 checks, MP2 bets, Hero calls, SB calls $1 (All-In), UTG+1 calls.
Final Pot: 21 BB
Main Pot: 21 BB, between UTG+1, MP2, Hero and SB. > Pot won by Hero (21 BB).
UTG+1 shows 5s Ac (three of a kind, aces).
MP2 shows As Th (three of a kind, aces).
Hero shows Ks Kd (full house, kings full of aces).
SB shows 9s Tc (two pair, aces and nines).
Outcome: Hero wins 21 BB.

Better
Just finished a three and half hour session at the .50/1 tables (I figured my remaining bankroll wouldn't stand the swings of the 1/2 tables) and ended up +5.53BB/100 hands. That's more like it.
Biggest win of the night:
Preflop: Hero is MP1 with Qs, Qc.
UTG folds, UTG+1 calls, Hero raises, MP2 calls, MP3 folds, CO folds, Button folds, SB calls, BB 3-bets, UTG+1 calls, Hero caps, MP2 calls, SB calls, BB calls, UTG+1 calls.
Flop: (20 SB) 5s, Td, Qd (5 players)
SB checks, BB bets, UTG+1 calls, Hero raises, MP2 calls, SB folds, BB 3-bets, UTG+1 folds, Hero caps, MP2 calls, BB calls.
Turn: (16.50 BB) 9c (3 players)
BB bets, Hero raises, MP2 folds, BB 3-bets, Hero calls.
River: (22.50 BB) 3h (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.
Final Pot: 24.50 BB
Main Pot: 24.50 BB, between BB and Hero. > Pot won by Hero (24.50 BB).
Results below:
BB shows Ac Ah (one pair, aces).
Hero shows Qs Qc (three of a kind, queens).
Outcome: Hero wins 24.50 BB.
I'll log on for another session once I've had something to eat. Hopefully I'll have something good to report later.

Another bad night
Damn. Got killed last night. -17.4BB/100 hands in 140 minutes. -21BB total. Yeesh. It was a lot like the previous session where a suckout king would call pre-flop raises and post-flop bets to make his hand on the turn or river with rags. It's frustrating as hell. Here are some examples:
I have rockets in the SB. Tight player (UTG+1) 2-bets. Suckout king (MP1) calls with A2o. When I 3-bet, the raiser and A2o call. The flop gives A2o a gutshot straight draw and he calls my bet after the raiser folds. The turn shows a flush draw and the pot does not give him the right odds to call. The river makes his straight, but not my flush. I bet the flush and he raises with the straight. I don't have the good sense to fold and lose 5BB.
I have cowboys in the SB. Suckout king (MP1) calls and his fishy friend (MP2) calls with 73s. I 2-bet, BB folds, the two callers call. Flop gives 73s a gutshot straight draw and the pot is paying the odds. Both of them call my bet. Turn makes the straight and 73s raises. I figure him for A6, but fear the straight, and just call. River shows a 10 and I check to the straight. I lose 4.5BB.
Pocket tens in the BB. Suckout king (MP1) calls with 76o. His fishy friend (MP2), the button, and SB call. Flop gives me a gutshot straight draw and 76o and open-ended straight draw. I check and 76o bets. Pot is paying the odds and I call. Turns shows an ace. With two overcards on the board, I check to 76o and call his bet. River makes his straight, but not mine. I check, call, and lose 3BB. I played this hand wrong. I should have check-raised to figure out if he had the queen. On the other hand, I've seen this guy go to the river a lot. Here are some of his stats: VP$IP: 58%, Went to SD: 42%. So would he have folded? I don't know.
I lost another 3BB to suckout king when my straight flush draw didn't turn up the straight or the flush, and SK went to the showdown with lowest pair, even with the board showing a pair and two overcards.
Anyway, you can see that I lost about half of the money on suckouts. Another quarter of it to bad play/suckouts. The rest I lost on premium hands not connecting on the flop.
If this keeps up much longer I'm going to lose my bankroll within the week.

So it wasn't just me
Well, I just lost $500. When I put it like that, it's a holy crap moment. I mean that's something close to a month's wages from my "real" "job".
So this is why you need a 300 big bets in your bankroll. It was the weekend of the runner-runner on Party, and my lungs are still full of water after repeatedly drowning in the river. You'd think playing 4 tables would take the edge off of the losses, but wins were few and far between on this awful weekend.
--HDouble
I think you can see the shoe prints on my left buttock... because I got my ass kicked yesterday at the tables. Geez, thank goodness for the Phish shows. In the middle of a horrible run of cards... my bankroll disappearing before my eyes... I desperately needed a break. Phish pulled me away from the tables and outside!
--Pauly
The good news is that for the majority of the times that I lost any more than 1SB, I was sucked out on. The costliest loss was my flush that I referenced in my pervious entry. I was drawing dead after the flop, but what were the chances that two of us flop an A high flush with him having the exact card that could beat me? So I guess what I'm finding out is that at the turn I was in the lead, many times quite dramatically, only to have the river get me. Frustrating.
So there you have it.
I did a similar analysis of my play after my losses tonight, and even though I lost 7.76BB/100 hands over the past 1141 hands, my stats were still decent. I put money in the pot just 18.58% of the time, and the cards wouldn't connect or I'd get the worst suckouts in poker history. Fools calling pre-flop raises with unsuited rags making three of a kind on the river or two pair on the turn.
Skill is sexy. Luck is sexier.
And with that I must finally acknowledge that yes, there are poker gods, and they have forsaken the poker bloggers--at least for the last half week. Praise be to the poker gods. May you bless us with rockets and cowboys and fishy fish.

Stick to the free rolls.
My tournament skills are non-existent. Until I develop some, I'll be better off participating in the free rolls and nothing else.
On the plus side, I made up for my losses last night and made my bonus. I think I strongly prefer the 1/2 tables so far. It's too bad my bankroll is ill-equipped to handle any massive swings.
Posted by glyphic at 11:12 AM
One of the worst weeks ever.
I lost $84.72 in 34.4 hours of play, at a rate of $2.46 an hour, or 4.16BB/100 hands. Wow. That's almost a quarter of my bankroll in one week. On top of that, I had withdrawn some cash from my Party account, leaving me with about 60% of my bankroll by week's end.
Well that called for desperate measures. I took all my money and opened a Multi account to get the 20% bonus.
My first session at the .50/1 table was awful. I moved on to the 1/2 table and things were almost as bad. Just when I nearly used up my initial buy-in, things turned around and I ended up +$7 at that table and -$3 overall.
I then decided to play 40 more hands to qualify for tomorrow morning's freeroll and lost another -$7. The unfortunate thing about that session is that I folded to a $4 call on the turn after my opponents raised and re-raised with their nut straights. I should have called. I was holding two pair, the pot was paying slightly better than my odds of catching one of my eight outs on the river, and it was a huge pot. Fuck. The river would have given me a boat, beating the two straights and netting me half my buy-in. Bad poker play. But at least I'm registered for the tourney tomorrow, and I'm just a dozen hands away from making my bonus. It'll be good to start the week up.
As for the difference between the .50/1 tables and the 1/2 tables, I can't say I notice much difference yet. The swings are bigger, but it seems like the 1/2 players respect strong bets/raises/check-raises more, even if they're every bit as likely to play any two cards as at the lower limit. I'll share more if anything occurs to me.

You go
Those of you who hang on every word of this blog know that the staff at StudioGlyphic endorsed another candidate for the Democratic nomination. That candidate, unfortunately, failed to overcome the Kerry 04 juggernaut as it rolled through the primaries.
Still, we whole-heartedly support John Kerry for President--in large part because of the disaster that the current administration represents, but also in no small part due to Kerry's many strengths, the largest of which is his toughness. He campaigns hard, and he gets better as he goes along. This is just one example of how Kerry stands apart:
...
"I'm tired of these Republicans who spend so much time denigrating Democrats and other people's commitment to the defense of our nation," said Kerry, a Vietnam veteran, in what appeared to be an unplanned comment.
"I'm tired of Karl Rove and Dick Cheney and a bunch of people who went out of their way to avoid their chance to serve when they had the chance."
"I went," he added. "I'm not going to listen to them talk to me about patriotism and how asking questions about the direction of our country somehow challenges patriotism. Because asking questions about the direction of our country is patriotism."
Hear, hear. The Democrats have let the Republicans run roughshod over them the past several years. Now they're fighting back, and that's a good thing.
There's more:
"I fought under that flag. I fought under that flag and I saw that flag draped over the coffin of friends.
This is a powerful statement. And it highlights an important contrast between Kerry and Bush. Bush drapes himself in the flag and speaks of patriotism, yet he refused to attend the funerals of those returning from the Middle East, draped in flags; he extended their tours; and he cut their pay and benefits. This man has got to go.
Can Kerry do it? Well, the mood of Democrats is such that the chances of victory are high. If campaign contributions mean anything, the $15 million Kerry brought in this week is a very good sign.

Tick, tick, tick, tick...
That's the sound of inevitability.
Put another tally next to the item "Determined to go to war in Iraq." Clarke, Clark, O'Neil, and now Woodward (I'm probably missing others) are painting a picture of an administration that's got its foreign policy/defense head up its collective ass. As the war takes a particularly deadly turn, more and more people will tune this in and realize these people have a credibility gap that rivals the size of the deficit.
Check out this tidbit:
He said those preparations included building landing strips and addressing other military needs in Kuwait.
The money, about $700 million, was taken in July 2002 from a budget item that had been approved for the war in Afghanistan, Woodward wrote.
"Some people are going to look at that document called the Constitution, which says that no money will be drawn from the Treasury unless appropriated by Congress," Woodward says in his CBS interview.
Good point.
Bob Woodward doesn't look anything like Robert Redford. But the resemblance between the Bush administration and the Nixon administration is uncanny.
There. All you non-poker playing readers should be satisfied.

Stupid people shouldn't drive
That's most people, thank you.
The 10 East has a couple lanes separated from the main freeway for people entering and exiting at Western, Arlington, Vermont, and Hoover. Sometimes I'll drive at 80 in those lanes, but I know what I'm doing. Other people don't. Anyway, traffic had slowed down toward the end of this little stretch as it always does. In fact, traffic had stopped. In the meantime, I'm watching my rearview mirror and see a truck speeding toward me. Almost at the last minute, he merges left and continues on. Of course, right behind him was a bitch who was following too close and not paying attention. When I saw she wasn't slowing down, I moved forward half a space, hoping it would be enough. It was, but she still had to slam on her brakes to stop in time.
Three things:
1) If you don't need a big truck, you shouldn't have one. It takes up space and it's hard to see around. I don't know that this was the case here, but it's something to keep in mind.
2) If you can't see around a vehicle in front of you, don't fucking tailgate, especially when you're in a situation with few outs.
3) Leaving space between your car and the car in front of you is a good idea. If I hadn't left that gap, I wouldn't be sitting here in class blogging about stupid drivers. I'd be on the side of the 10, fucking up traffic, getting some stupid bitch's information and waiting for the cops.
We both ended up getting off at the same exit. When she came up beside me, she didn't even look over. I wonder if she has any idea how close she came to flying through her windshield? I don't know if she was wearing her seatbelt, but she was driving a shitty American car, and I'm near certain the safety equipment would have failed.

EPoints
PokerGrub is running a promotion on his site where if you sign up for Empire through his affiliate link and place in the top 20 in the Vegas Dreams freeroll, you get $1048. Now, I like Grubby as much as the next poker blogger, but there is no way in hell I would even qualify for this contest. You need to be a VIP member to play in the freeroll, and that requires collecting 5000 EPoints. In raked hands, that requires playing 25 million raked hands. The fastest way to collect EPoints would be to play as many expensive multi-table tournaments a day as possible. For every dollar you pay in fees, you get an EPoint. EPoints are also awarded by squaring the number of multi-table tournaments ($9 buy-in or more) you play in a day.
For example, if you play one multi-table tournament with a $20 fee, you get 21 EPoints. If you play two of these tournaments, you get 44 EPoints. For three, you get 69 Epoints, and for four, you get 96. Even at the rate of four of these a day, you'd have to play for 53 days to get to 5000. And that still doesn't get you in the freeroll.
It's just not worth it unless you know you stand a good chance of winning in those tournaments.

Getting Killed
So far I've netted -$30 this week. A far cry from the +$65 of last week and +$128 of the week before. That said, there are two more days to this week. And I think there have only been a few instances where I should have changed my play or I gave up a pot to some idiot with nothing. I'm seeing very few flops, and winning a majority of showdowns. Now if I'd only get some cards, I can increase both those numbers.
Better make my Friday count.

This is one of those bot sites that try to trick people into going to their sites by using keywords and content from other people's sites that might be relevant. But... "your first step to alarm car dean howard" is probably not what most people are looking for. Undue Pressure
Mr. Boy Genius has linked to this blog. I don't think I've had any worthwhile posts in a while, so I'm not sure what y'all are going to read here while visiting.
On the poker front, I lost $50 or so yesterday playing no limit and limit. Wasn't getting cards to play, and couldn't get them to connect at all. I haven't had a day like that in a while. Pretty disheartening, especially since I had just recently moved into the black. I still haven't paid myself back for my poker bankroll, since that would only leave me with $10 of other people's money (OPM).
Today I wasn't able to take advantage of the WPT-fueled fish due to academic commitments. I still managed to get in a late night session and made a few bucks, averaging about 22BB per 100. That was a little more like it. One table was pretty amazing. I caught a run of good cards, and even several of the hands I folded pre-flop turned out to be winners. The table was still as loose and aggressive as it had been when I decided to quit, but when a few orbits go by and your cards don't catch, sometimes you figure you're ahead and that's good enough for an early Thursday morning.
Actually, now that I think back on it, I think I realized that I had just been lucky and had to get out of there fast. On one hand, my KQ and someone else's KK sucked out the winning straight on the river, much to the dismay (I'm sure) of the guy who had rockets. I had paired the queen and then stayed for the straight, convinced that the other guys were full of it. Lucky me. On one of my first hands I had pocket queens that sucked out a set on the river after my oppponent flopped two pair with big slick. I had raised pre-flop in the big blind and bet first in after the flop put both overcards on the board. Then, instead of folding to his raise, I called. After the turn gave me a flush draw, I decided to play pot odds instead of folding to his bet and fished for the flush. Lucky again. One time in the BB, I had J4o and flopped two pair. Damn lucky.
Of course, on one hand with cowboys, I decided to fold to a guy representing three queens. He had, of course, nothing at all. And that probably had a lot to do with my quitting a half hour later. It was really way too late for me to stick around for a chance to slap that guy around with a big pair.

Adventures in the no limit world
I was bored of the .50/1 games and decided to try my hand at the $25 NL tables. Wow, I got killed. I lost $21 in an hour and twenty minutes. I folded cowboys to a boat on the board and queens to a flush. That was tough.
The one hand I won I flopped a flush with big slick. Everyone checked on the flop, including me. When the king appeared on the turn, I bet a buck and a half, hoping to get some kind of money out of the game. Two people called and two folded. With the river pairing the board, I bet $3. One person folded, one called. He had big slick suited, but it was the wrong suit.
And that was it. With $4 left I decided to cut my losses.

The weekly game
About half an hour and four drinks into the weekly game, I realized I just didn't care about a game with a $5 buy-in. I liked playing, but it wasn't that important to win.
I ended up losing $4.
I signed onto Party and made $12.25 in 18 minutes. Before our game I'd made $10.75. While $4 is a significant percentage of that, it's not like I'm trying to grow my bankroll at the expense of my friends. Plus, the play's too slow and the limit's not that interesting. That said, I think I played mostly right, but got caught by better cards, or shittier cards sucking out on me.
There were a couple hands I would have played differently, but I won't go into them here.

Occupation: Poker Player
DavidRoss has a new post: Playing online for a living Week 50
Worth reading.
When he talks about a win rate of 2BB/100 hands, you start thinking, "Hey, I can do that." I'm actually at 4.22BB/100 hands, but I'm playing far lower limits. I'd love to get my hands on some of his hand histories.
Like I said, DavidRoss should be your hero, too. For those of who play, talk of going pro always comes up, even when our bankrolls are easily the size of a 5/10 or 15/30 pot. Whether unemployed, voluntarily off the payroll, or in grad school, the idea of living off of other people's disposable income sounds appealing. To me, it's also a bit unappealing. I have a scorn/pity relationship with stupid people.
Anyway, DR also talks about how the 2+2 forum has taught him a lot about not only play, but also the virtues of Party and PT. You infidels should heed this as well.
The older ones are worth reading, too. I'm not actually trying to re-use content. Eventually I'll get through all 50 weeks and have a master list somewhere. For now, this is all I have the time and patience to compile.

Week 3
It's been three weeks since I've started tracking my poker play. While week 3 wasn't as awesome as week 2, I still made $65 for the week. Hourly, it's terrible. Oh god it's terrible.
On the bright side, I've finally pushed into the black, even while counting money I've spent on poker-related items. Of course, that includes bonuses I made over the past week and half. I'll take 'em. As someone else put it, deposit bonuses are really rake refunds, and I've seen more than my share of rakes. Okay, maybe just my share.
The plan from here on out is to continue to win other people's money week to week, and finally get my own personal money out of my bankroll. Then keep building the bankroll and move up in limits. This will take... at least another month or two, and it's going to have to be a strong two months.
I have to admit... this post isn't anything near what DavidRoss posts:

Bush, Terrorism
Atrios summarizes what happened in August 2001:

August 7, 2001: Bush begins month long vacation in Crawford, TX.
Yup. The terrible thing is that this self-styled war president hasn't changed his vacation schedule after Septemeber 11.

David Ross is your hero too
If you haven't been following David Ross' journey as a professional online poker player (and to be honest, I'm not going to go trolling the bulletin boards when Iggy can do it for me), check out his post for week 49 on the 2+2 Forums:
This is the hand that convinced me to go back to my Dr. Pepper. UTG limps, and I limp behind him with 4c 4s. Button and small blind limp as well and the BB checks. The flop is Ts 5s 4h. Checked to me and I bet. Button calls and SB check-raises. BB calls 2 cold, UTG folds and I smooth call, fairly certain there will be a bet and a call on the turn allowing me to get a nice raise on the turn if no spade comes. Button calls behind me. Turn is 8d. Unfortunately both blinds check. I bet and get called by all 3. River is Js. Argh. I've put at least one of the blinds on spades. They both check and I check too. Button bets out, SB folds and the BB raises. There is $133 in the pot and I have to put up $20 more. I fold and the button calls. The BB had J4 and the button had J8, the J made both of them 2 pair. There are a few different ways I could have played this, but the bottom line is how often will the river fold be a good one as oppsed to missing out on 13 BB's?
And in case you were wondering, yes, he's playing tables at 10 times my limit. Don't rub it in.
This, of course, is where the profit and loss come from:
I've been on all sides of that table.

Headache
Around the same time that I met me old boss for lunch, I developed a bad headache that got progressively worse as Thursday afternoon went on. So bad, in fact, that I almost didn't want to play poker. Still, I had a little bit of time to kill before having to go work on a group project. I fired up Empire and figured I'd try to get a premium hand, make a killing, and leave.
First hand in, everyone folded to the big blind, so I got my blind back plus interest. Second hand ate the interest and got thrown out. Hands three and four were also tossed. The flop on number four would have given me two pair, kings and sevens. I went upstairs to get some stuff for the group project.
When I came down, it was my action for hand number five, and I was looking at pocket rockets and a raise from the guy to the left of the big blind. Two people had folded to his raise, and I quickly re-raised, hoping that Empire wouldn't time me out in that split second it took to hit "raise." The raise went through and two more people folded. SB, BB, and raiser called. I noted that the previous hand had been won with a set of fours, and hoped my Aces would hold up.
Flop came up J-3-2 rainbow. So far, so good. You never know with fish, and I wasn't sure if these were fish. The raiser definitely wasn't, as near as I could tell. The other two... I don't know. But all three callers checked to me, so I bet, SB folded, and BB and raiser called.
Turn came up 5H, which ruled out any runner runner flushes, but made a low straight or fishy two pair a distinct possibility. Still, both my opponents checked to me, so I bet again, and watched the BB call and the raiser fold.
River came up 9. BB checked, I bet, BB called. I still had my rockets, and BB had... Ace ten suited? He decided to pay an additional dollar on top of his three dollars to play for high card? With his hand, I don't think I would have seen the flop with two raises before me, BB be damned. After that flop, I definitely would not have called.
Looking at the brief history on this guy, it seems that he'll see 4 of every 5 flops. This is why people love Party. Some people will play any two cards and never know when they're beat.
Anyway, the rest of the hands for that round were junk (with the exception of a pair of 8s that flopped two overcards), so I bailed with my $6.50 profit and salivated over the 72BB/100 hands stat I had achieved in those 9 minutes. After I got back from my group project meeting, my head still hurt and I was ready for bed. Up $6.50 for the day.
Wednesday was more typical. 4.37 hours of game time (versus .15) with some nice profits, which weren't so typical. I won $52.75 combined at 5 of the 9 tables I played, lost $7.50 combined at 3 tables, and broke even on the ninth, giving me a net gain of $45.25 at a rate of 17.01BB/100 hands. At this point I would like to thank Travel Channel and the World Poker Tour for making all of this possible.

Lunchtime tournament
I'd read somewhere that lots of people try to squeeze in a tournament during their lunch hour, so I decided to give it a try. It lasted about 50 minutes or so, and I ended up in second, netting $19.
Not bad.

Inglewood Rejects Wal-Mart
Go Inglewood.
A bid by the world's largest corporation to bypass uncooperative elected officials and take its aggressive expansion plans to voters failed Tuesday, as Inglewood residents overwhelmingly rejected Wal-Mart's proposal to build a colossal retail and grocery center without an environmental review or public hearings.
With all votes counted Tuesday evening, 4,575 Inglewood residents had voted in favor of Wal-Mart's plan, while 7,049 had voted against it.
There are a lot of winners here: grocery workers, city planners, elected officials, local residents, small businesses and poker players. Really? Poker players? Yeah. They would have dumped their supercenter right in HPark's parking lot. Not cool.
This measure failed, but it's yet another example of why direct democracy is a bad idea. We need to do something about this whole initiative thing.

SNGs
Played five Sit N Go, single table tournaments today. Afternoons at the limit tables haven't been my strong suit, so I decided to play the tournaments. Came in 2nd and 3rd in two of the first three, and felt pretty good. Then I lost the rest, sometimes quite early, giving me an overall loss of $5. Did I have $5 worth of entertainment? Sure. Would I rather have the $17 I netted after tourney 3? You bet your ass.
Time for class. Back to the .5/1 tables tonight.

Not sure what happened, but I only ended up $42 according to PokerTracker. In fact, my game time numbers have been revised downward to 8.27 hours. Very bizarre.

The day so far
Up $60. Not bad. Of course, that's after 8.28 hours of game time (i.e., an hour at two tables is two hours of game time), giving me a win rate of $7.42 an hour. I think Ben and Jerry's pays more than that. But now that my bank roll is over $200 (I withdrew $55 yesterday), I'm gettin' close to the point where I'll move on to a higher limit. The same win rate at a .50/1 will net me almost $15 an hour, which is what a good internship will pay me.

Up another $16
Grind, grind, grind. I was looking back at one of my past entries, and I can see how my expectations are completely warped by a few good sessions where I netted $30-50. I suppose the good thing is that I've not experienced another loss like last Monday afternoon's. The bad thing is that I was up $30 today before I blew $14 on some bad beats and fishing expeditions. The overall problem is that I want to build the bankroll up to the point where I have a) made up for my PokerStars losses, and b) can move on to higher limit tables. Until then, I guess I'll have to be ecstatic about $16.
In other news, I was trolling around on the poker blogosphere and came across a new one to add to the right side: Boy Genius.

Friday night is the weekend
Combined bankroll is now over $200. Made another $20 today and played the requisite number of raked hands for the deposit bonus. Would have been higher if it hadn't been for a couple bad beats at this table. But it's been good for the most part.

Empire is another name for Party
Empire Poker and Party Poker are basically just two skins for the same game. So when Empire sent me a 50% bonus code, I promptly transferred $100 of my Party bankroll over to Empire. So far I'm up $30 and I've played about 70 of the 250 raked hands required to get the bonus.
My combined bankroll is about $137, which is a result of the heavy losses I sustained on Monday and the minor gains from the rest of the week. I even won some money while playing Thursday evening from 6 to 7.
I'm looking forward to pushing past $200 this weekend. Yup, I'm just a small-time, low-limit grinder.
