Vista is a piece of crap

I’ve gotten the double whammy of Vista and Office 2007 at work, and it’s driving me nuts. There’s not too much I can do with the IT policies at work, but I’m trying to figure out my alternatives for the next home machine.

Specifically I’m thinking about getting a new laptop for the wife. Since Vista is now the only option on most machines, I’m considering getting one of those “netbooks” that come with XP. I really like the idea of the netbook; it’s super-light, and heat generation is apparently much reduced with the solid state hard drive. The real question is, can you practically use one of these machines as your only computer, or are most people just using them to get on the Internet and do simple things on the go?

Alternatively, I could go for a MacBook or a Windows laptop and buy a copy of XP for it. Thoughts?

California Department of Insurance

Soon after I bought the S2000 I started shopping around for a new insurance company. I’d been with the Auto Club for years, but I figured I could save some money if I looked. A friend of mine recommended Wawanesa, but I wanted to get more information.

The California Department of Insurance, as it turns out, has some fantastic information on insurance companies.

The Consumer Complaint Study ranks insurance companies “based on the number of Justified Complaints to 100,000 Earned Exposures.”

The Automobile Premium Survey features “an interactive tool for consumers to use to obtain a premium comparison between insurance companies.”

Wawanesa ranked third-lowest out of fifty in the complaint study and lowest in premiums for my particular insurance needs ($400 cheaper than anyone else!). Highly recommend!!! A+++

False dichotomies and specious arguments

False dichotomy: Pick Obama or McCain. You always have the choice of picking a third party, writing in another name, or not voting for the office.

Specious argument: There’s no difference between the Democrats and the Republicans. There are very real differences and consequences, and they should inform your decision.
